Online Sterilization
A Different Approach to Sterilization for High Value Single Use Medical Devices

Medical device manufacturers of high value, limited quantity devices cannot enjoy the advantages of radiation sterilization without using high throughput contract plants. These bring the disadvantages of:

  • interruption of the quality assurance trail when products leave your plant.
  • bulk rather than item-by- item QA.
  • turnaround time and inflexible scheduling result in high inventory requirements.
  • high price for small batch processing.

The technical drawbacks could all be eliminated with an in-house electron beam plant and this is now possible at a comparable and affordable price for your market segment.

An in-line electron beam sterilizer that matches the electron beam power and penetration to the individually packaged product may be the answer for you. The I-Ax Technologies system uses a self shielded electron accelerator of small physical dimensions that can be located on the production floor. No million dollar walk-in bunker and a system you can relocate as production logistics change.

A key element of the solution lies in the design of a product conveyor that incorporates shielding that moves
with the product (I-Ax Technologies US Patent Application #09/204,262). The electron accelerator can be
chosen from one of several manufacturers.

The outline specifications for this in-line sterilizer are.

Penetration: Sufficient for most individually packaged devices
Throughput: 35 cu ft/hr (1 m3/hr) at dose of 25 kGy for bulk density of 0.15

We think you will agree that the benefits of keeping products in-house until shipment are well worth the cost.
